Hen not laying

Post by nickydwuk » 08 Jun 2014, 18:58

We bought our latest addition over 5 weeks ago (a sussex ranger/star). She was POL then. She still has not laid an egg. Her comb has now fully grown and is red and she seems healthy, is eating well and even spends time in the nest box but no eggs. Any suggestions?

She'll get there. Time in the nestbox is an excellent sign. The up side of her starting later than the others is that she'll probably continue to lay when they decided to take time off.

Pop a couple of dummy eggs in the nestbox,it'll at least teach her when she pecks at them out of curiosity theres no reward and also where she is to lay when the time comes.

Thanks for the advice - will give her more time - although OH has threatened her with the roasting tin if she doesn't start soon  (he doesn't mean it)

Try laying your hand gently on her back - if she squats down then she's sure to lay very soon.
