Re: fertile eggs

Yes, just yolk means infertile eggs.

Re: fertile eggs

I'm interested to know why people say that you shouldn't put an egg in the incubator the same day as it is laid. I've done it loads of times, and I think all have hatched.

Re: How do I look after Hens in winter

We've had night-time temperatures of minus 20 sometimes - once for three weeks at a stretch, with daytime temperatures not getting above zero. I've never yet put a heater in a hen house.

Hi Mark. I've sent you a PM. Let's see if that works!

Re: Oeufs à couver (Hatching eggs for sale/wanted)

I have some I can post. Although laying has fallen a little since the start of July, I am still in a position to send up to a dozen, that will be a maximum of four days old at the time of sending. I was initially reluctant to send by post, but it has worked very well so far. Obviously, posting eggs ...

Re: Geese

Mine don't make too much noise before they're let out in the morning, but set up a loud honking at any time of day whenever they see anything that interests them - and that happens quite a lot. Yes, very messy, but fun to have around. I have two girls, and we had a total of 63 eggs from them this sp...

Re: Misshapen Air Sac, chances of hatch?

My hatch is now, I think, complete. Predictably, the posted eggs fared badly compared to the ones I got locally (11 out of 12 Wyandottes hatched), but the result from the eggs that had come a long way wasn't too bad: 4 out of 6 Barnevelders and 2 out of 6 Cream Legbars - all of which showed misshape...

Re: Misshapen Air Sac, chances of hatch?

I currently have eggs in the incubator, some of which were posted in England and then brought out to me here in France. All the posted ones that got through the first candling session have strange, heart-shaped air sacs, but most have continued to develop. A friend has told me that she has seen this...

Re: New Brinsea Octagon question

I think I'd rather go by the manufacturer's recommendations, if that works for everyone else, as it's probably the cumulative humidity over the whole incubation period that is important. I bought the new one because I really thought the old one was on the blink. It was struggling to hold its tempera...

New Brinsea Octagon question

I've just bought myself a new Brinsea Octagon 20 Eco incubator with turning cradle. Looks very straightforward, but I'm just wondering about when to put water in the channel. With my old incubator, the manufacturer's recommendation was to run it dry for the first three days, and then add water, and ...

Re: jinxed

Luck- good and bad - often goes in waves. Last year, within the space of a couple of months, I lost all my Brahmas to a stoat, inadvertently killed a baby goat with insecticide, and then bought an expensive Brahma hen to start all over again, only to have her die before laying a single egg. This yea...

Re: My abominable record with broodies

Of the 34 eggs put under broodies over three weeks ago, not a single one has resulted in a live chick. The Barnevelder smothered all hers to death, and the Brahma and the Sussex didn't even get theirs to the pipping stage. I shall never use a broody again. ](*,)

Re: My abominable record with broodies

It's OK. I'm quite philosophical about it. I've only given them eggs I have lots of, and can easily replace. I never give broodies expensive bought hatching eggs any more, though. In eight years, I've only ever managed ONE chick from a broody sitting on bought eggs, whereas I've had up to 100% hatch...

My abominable record with broodies

My abominable record with broodies continues. I have three broodies at the moment. The Barnevelder was due to hatch her eggs yesterday. She broke two early on, and has squashed four chicks to death as they were hatching. I got her off the nest this morning, to have a look. Of the remaining six, thre...
