Re: My travel journal -Not certain if I ever posted this

As I was driving home from work today I spotted thebus coming towards me. I waved like mad and then realised Sue had no way of knowing it was me! So, I turned around and followed her - her first (and last I hope) Shetland stalker! Sue kindly pulled off the road into a passing place to let the cars b...

Re: Large growth in chicken (photos)

We decided not to feed this bird to the dogs. From looking around the internet I think she must have been an 'internal egg layer' and this is the yolks of the eggs she was producing massed together. There was no smell but I cleaned everything down well to make sure I'm not cross contaminating if the...

Large growth in chicken (photos)

We're downsizing our flock (to nowt for now) and having given the younger birds away to my boss (on an egg supply deal!) I am dispatching the older birds to feed us and the dogs. The hen I did tonight had a large ball shaped 'thing' inside her and being a nosy sort I opened it up to have a look! It ...

Re: An unexpected and potentially magical dilemma.

I had a cockeral dumped here once, similar age and size to the young birds I had here at the time, maybe they thought I wouldn't notice one more! I did and it didn't stay!

Hunt the chicken ...

For the last few nights we have been playing an annoying game of hunt the chickens. We have 3 young hens hatched this year and they are just joining the grown ups. During they day they hang out on the edge of the flock, but at night ..... John and I have been out with torches, scouring the garden an...

New babies

5 babies so far, 3 from green eggs (auracana or cream legbar) 2 from white - exchequor leghorn. Dad is an auracana. Not a great photo - had to be quick, first time anxious mum!

Re: Never lending it out again!

Had the same problem when I lent my first incubator out - she took it apart to clean it and it rattled and made horrendous noises thereafter.

Not sure what pics you are wanting to see? I click on genetics and then get a list of threads the same as any other forum which I can then open?

Re: newspaper ,is it ok ?

This sort of game is very normal! Once they start finding worms and things (bits of grape are funny, we call it grape rugby) they will all chase each other for one disregarding the fact there are more! My hens were doing it yesterday when I was throwing worms out of the veg garden for my entertainme...

Re: Broody in dog cage now...update 25/05/13

The last one I had, I moved with her hidden stash of eggs to a small coop and she abandoned being broody straight away - because I was going to let her sit! Blooming hens! She paced and squawked and we let her out the next day just to see what she would do and she went straight back to the flock and...

Never heard of it before either but hope it may give someone else an idea to use. Delivered them today and the first hugs were for me! :D The older children's cushions disappeared off to their rooms with them and the wee one carried his around with him. I took a quick photo this morning of the famil...

Re: Cockerel becoming tame

Our cockeral (auracana) doesn't come too close but will come running calling the girls if there is food on offer. He's about 10 months now and seems gentle with the girls. I did go out at 1.30 this am and switch the light off in the hen house to shut him up though! One of the hens fell off the perch...
